Under-Sink Swap Checklist

Open the cabinet. Soften the chemistry. Keep the calm.

A one-sitting guide for bleach burn, mystery “fresh” scent, dish soap that foams forever, and laundry pods parked next to the trash bags. No shame, no 40-product overhaul — just clearer air and kinder counters.

Print tip: Landscape or portrait both work. Check boxes as you go. Keep this on the fridge or taped inside the cabinet door.

How to use this checklist

  1. Open the under-sink cabinet (and the laundry shelf if detergent lives nearby).
  2. For each item: note the toxic clue, consider the clean swap, shop only if you’re ready.
  3. Finish what you already own when you can — then replace empty bottles with the softer option.
  4. Browse the full library anytime: All Swaps.

Soft counters. Clearer breath. Swap slow.

Toxic clue
Sharp chlorine smell; sodium hypochlorite; “kills 99.9%” marketed for daily counters; never mix with ammonia or acids. Everyday bleach wipe-downs can irritate airways and leave residue where coffee cups and kid snacks land.
Clean swap
Branch Basics Concentrate — plant-based concentrate you dilute for all-purpose kitchen wipe-downs. Same spray-and-wipe ritual, gentler ingredient story. Save harsh bleach for rare, well-ventilated deep cleans if you still need it.

Toxic clue
Synthetic fragrance listed as “fragrance/parfum”; ammonia or quaternary ammonium (“quats”); strong perfume that lingers after the surface is dry.
Clean swap
Same hero bottle: dilute Branch Basics for counters, sinks, high-touch spots. One concentrate → fewer single-use plastic sprays crowding the cabinet.

Toxic clue
Endless foam that never quite rinses; dyes; fragrance that clings to hands and glassware; surfactants that strip skin.
Clean swap
Use a Branch Basics dish dilution (follow bottle guidance) or another plant-based, fragrance-light dish liquid. Rinse well; you don’t need a foam mountain to get grease off a pan.

Toxic clue
Bags that smell like candy or “fresh linen” before anything hits the bin; fragrance masking garbage instead of emptying it. Synthetic scent = more VOCs in a closed cabinet.
Clean swap
Switch to unscented liners. Empty more often. Optional: a drop of essential oil on a cotton pad outside the bag, or a diffuser in the room — not perfume baked into plastic.

Toxic clue
Permanently damp cellulose that smells like a swamp; antibacterial “kill germs” coatings you don’t need for dishes; microplastic scrubbers shedding into the drain.
Clean swap
Rotate sponges often; wring dry; microwave damp sponge briefly or run through dishwasher if the brand allows. Prefer compostable cellulose, wood-pulp scrubbers, or washable Swedish-style cloths. Replace on a schedule — smell is your friend.
Shop note
No single must-buy — keep it simple and biodegradable when you restock. Browse kitchen ideas.
Toxic clue
Soft PVC/vinyl gloves can contain phthalates; strong “new plastic” smell; powder that irritates skin.
Clean swap
Choose nitrile or natural-rubber options when you can; skip heavily fragranced “lotion” gloves. Wash reusable gloves and hang to dry. Bare hands + Branch Basics is fine for light jobs.
Shop note
Optional restock — prioritize fit and non-PVC when you replace them.
Toxic clue
Bright pods kids might mistake for candy; long ingredient lists with 1,4-dioxane concerns, optical brighteners, and synthetic fragrance that lives in your clothes all day.
Clean swap
Molly’s Suds — cleaner, biodegradable laundry that doesn’t perfume your whole wardrobe. Keep pods up high and sealed if you still finish a box.

Toxic clue
Flaking Teflon/PTFE; pans that smoke empty on high heat; “forever chemical” coatings you’re ready to retire.
Clean swap
Lodge cast iron — season it, love it, pass it down. Naturally slick without fluorinated coatings.
